Garden Associate
Do you like to spend time outdoors and growing plants and vegetables?
Position Summary: The volunteer will assist the Oliver Kelley Farm staff in planting, cultivating, harvesting and seed saving of the Kelley Farm’s Historic Garden and Farm Lab Garden. This work will help provide learning opportunities for Oliver Kelley Farm Visitors, to sustain the supply of historical/heritage crops and to maintain the gardens for everyone to enjoy.
Time commitment: Weekly or every-other-week on days the Farm is open (Wednesdays - Saturdays), 10:00 am - noon. Growing season is June 11 through August 30.
Responsibilities:
Perform seasonally appropriate gardening tasks in the historic and modern gardens.
Follow instructions given by staff members each day for work to be completed within the garden area.
Direct visitors to specific areas and buildings around the site.
Warmly welcome visitors.
Use a radio to communicate with site staff and volunteers; keep radio on person at all times during volunteer shift.
Qualifications:
Able to perform light to medium duty physical labor, which may include the occasional use of power equipment such as roto-tillers.
Comfortable working in warm, wet, buggy and dusty conditions where the potential to receive insect bites/stings is present.
Previous gardening experience is desired.
Friendly, outgoing, and respectful with guests of all ages.
Punctual, dependable, and attentive to detail.
Flexible and adaptable in a dynamic and changing environment.
